Delaware Bay Fishing Report 11-13-12

Port Elizabeth

Striped bass were boated on the bay, said Sharon from The Girls Place Bait & Tackle. Many were pleased with the fishing this weekend, and some were not, but overall the fishing seemed fairly good. Catches were heard about throughout the bay, from the southern end to farther north, a couple of miles off Fortescue. A 38-pounder that a friend socked was the biggest heard about recently. Most anglers fished for the stripers with chunks of fresh bunker. Sometimes anglers fished with fresh clams for them. The supply of fresh bunker grew in past days, after it was scarce following the hurricane. It still wasn’t up to par, and anglers should call ahead to reserve to ensure a supply. Fresh clams remained scarce, and the shop was able to provide a few during the weekend. Again, call to reserve. A few stripers beached from the ocean surf were heard about. A 41-incher was banked from the surf at North Wildwood. The Girls Place, located on Route 47, just after Route 55 ends, stocks a large supply of baits and tackle. It’s the long, one-story, yellow building on the right, with plenty of parking, including for trailered boats.

Fortescue

The Buccaneer is up and running after the hurricane, chartering for striped bass, Capt. Ralph said. Throwback stripers were reeled in during a trip on the weekend aboard on chunks of bunker. But keepers decked were heard about. Just wasn’t at the right place at the right time, Ralph said. Charters on the Buccaneer are only $400, compared with $500 or $600 on other vessels.

Throwback striped bass were landed Saturday and Sunday on the party boat Salt Talk, Capt. Howard said. But better-sized stripers, keepers, began to be caught from the bay. Some were taken near the wreck buoy and the southern bay. A 59-1/2-pound 57-incher was hauled from the southern bay on Saturday. The Salt Talk’s trips fished at the stakes, and the bay was 50 to 51 degrees on the outings. Open-boat trips for stripers are scheduled daily when no charter is booked. Call to confirm.

Cape May

Four striped bass to 25 pounds were bagged Saturday and seven stripers to 20 pounds were boxed Sunday on the bay on the Heavy Hitter, Capt. George said. The anglers – Kevin Driscoll’s charter on Saturday and Dave Bock’s on Sunday – fished with bunker chunks. The bass that bit Saturday were larger, and fishing seemed better that day. Lots of dogfish were hooked on Saturday’s trip, but none showed up on Sunday’s. The bay became dirty once incoming tide began Sunday. The Cape May Rips and the ocean reportedly were dirty during the weekend.
